George Nakashima Set of Six 'New' Dining Chairs in Walnut and Hickory

With its sturdy form, thoughtful material choices, and refined joinery, these custom-made “New” dining chairs (1976 and 1977) exemplify George Nakashima’s distinctive approach and masterful craftsmanship. Conceived as a modern interpretation of the traditional English Windsor chair, it features a backrest defined by slender hickory spindles. The seat is carefully shaped and subtly carved to support the body, balancing comfort with visual lightness. Richly textured wood surfaces reveal pronounced grain and tonal variation, underscoring the chair’s natural, organic character. Rooted in Nakashima’s deep respect for the living qualities of wood, the armchair achieves both exceptional durability and a quietly timeless presence. During this period, New Hope formed the home port for many great designers such as Phillip Lloyd Powell and Paul Evans.
