A Sculptural Mid-Century Modern Brass-Patinated Zinc "Zoca" Vase by Sonja Katzin

$640

An elegant and highly artistic Swedish Mid-Century Modern vase from the rare "Zoca" series, designed by the Swedish sculptor and designer Sonja Katzin (1919–2014) for Nilsjohan during the 1950s. This small, striking vase showcases Katzin's background in fine art, featuring an organic, biomorphic silhouette split into an asymmetrical double-spout form reminiscent of natural branch formations. Cast in heavy zinc with a rich, brass-patinated finish, the surface is intricately detailed with deeply carved, relief-molded geometric eyes, concentric ovals, and abstract diamond patterns. The resulting texture creates a brilliant play of shadow and light, giving the object an almost totemic, primitive modernist appeal. Sonja Katzin’s mid-century collaborations with iconic Swedish manufacturers Nilsjohan and ASEA yielded only a small number of these highly artistic, heavily detailed metal designs, making pieces from the "Zoca" series rare and highly sought after by collectors of Scandinavian design. With its compact proportions and commanding sculptural presence, this vase is a superb specimen of Swedish studio metalwork that adds sophisticated texture and vintage character to any modern interior.
